Why Do I Need to Be Saved?

This is a life preserver that says "Save me" on it to represent the reason why we need to be saved.

If you’re around Christians much, you might hear them talk about being “saved.” It’s one of those buzzwords that means a whole lot to some people but might be rather vague to others. After all, if people need to be saved, that implies they are in some sort of danger. That they need someone to rescue them and pull them out of harm’s way. Well, what if I told you that there are only two types of people in this world? There are those who are going to Hell when they die and those who will be saved from it. And Jesus is the only Savior.

It’s a Bad News/Good News Situation.

The bad news is that every person on earth has sinned. We have done bad things like lie, cheat, steal, disobey parents, lust, and hate. These things seem kind of “normal” in our messed-up world. But they are not acceptable to a holy, perfect, sinless God. In fact, there is no way we could ever be good enough to stand in His presence in our current condition. That means we are separated from God. The only way to breach the gap is by paying the price that God requires — blood.

But the good news, also called the gospel, is that God loves us and wants a relationship with us. He made a way for us to be reconciled to Him by sending His only Son into the world to save us. Jesus lived a sinless life and died a horrible death on the cross. His sacrified paid the price of blood that God required. Now, if we will turn away from that sin (repent) and decide to do things God’s way, He will forgive us. We must confess with our mouth and believe in our hearts that God raised His Son Jesus from the dead. Then God will save us from Hell by His grace through our faith.

Even Better News

And the even better news is that this isn’t the end of the story at all. You aren’t just saved FROM Hell, but you’re saved TO a life of purpose in the family of God. Once you surrender your life to the Lord completely, He will send His Holy Spirit to dwell in you. You will be a child of God and will never be alone again. He will hear your prayers when you pray to Him, and He will comfort you when you’re sad. When you read the Bible, He will show you what you need to know to follow Him. You will start to change for the better and become more like Him every day. He is not a God afar off but a God near at hand. He knows right where you are in life. Is He calling you to come to Him?
