A Lesson from “Pick a Duck”

This is a picture of a Pick a Duck pond at a fair or carnival.

When I was a kid in the 1970’s there was a carnival game we called “Pick a Duck.” It was my favorite game, so anytime my family and I would head to the midway at the fair, I would look for it. The game was simple. Plastic ducks floated in circles in a tub. You paid your tickets and picked a duck. The little number on the bottom determined if you won a big prize or a little prize, but every duck won something. I don’t remember every taking home anything big, but I do remember the euphoric feeling of promise right before I picked. I was about to be a winner. This impression was so strong with me the other night that I just knew there was a message in it. I decided to pray.

Praying for an Answer

Recently, I learned the PRAY method of prayer (Praise, Repent, Ask, Yield), so even before I asked the Lord to reveal any message or lesson He had for me, I began my praise. Suddenly, the thoughts that bubbled up and out of me were all about how much I loved to be a part of God’s life. How I just didn’t even know where He would show up day to day, but it is always so exciting to see what He will do next.

Will He speak to me while I’m reading the Bible? Send me to help someone? Show me a lesson in an analogy? Answer a prayer? Use me to speak to someone about Him? Let me feel His presence in worship? Remind me that He loves me?

A Lesson in the Picking

All of a sudden, I realized that serving God is much like the pick a duck game. There are so many opportunities to witness His great goodness and glory that each day we wake up is filled with the same sort of promise as pick a duck — another chance to “win.”

As a little duck-picking kid, I had no idea that one day God would call me to my ministry #duckforjesus. Looking back, I can see so many ways that God was leading me, His hand firmly on my life. What a great and glorious God we serve!
